Drophead Coupe´ Interior View
Driving Environment
It’s our firm belief that driving or riding in a Phantom Drophead Coupé is one of the finest motoring experiences you can have.
Our designers call it the ‘Authority Concept’, but sat in the driver’s seat you would recognise it simply as a sense of control and wellbeing. Central to this idea is the elevated driving position, which gives you a commanding view down the Phantom Drophead Coupé’s impressive bonnet and beyond, to the road ahead. Careful attention was also paid to the positioning of the pedals, steering wheel and driver, to ensure they are all in perfect alignment.
Driver and passengers alike will appreciate the extensive use of the finest natural materials, as they fill the interior with a sense of tactility and warmth, while the new milled-finish aluminium dashboard extends the natural metal theme from the Phantom Drophead Coupé’s striking exterior to its cosseting interior, thus emphasising the sense of bringing the outside inside. Book matched veneers are available as an option, should you prefer the intriguing grain, perfect symmetry and high-gloss of the very best wood.
Driving Controls
Your primary point of contact with the Phantom Drophead Coupé, the multi-function steering wheel is the product of detailed design, and intended to reinforce the driver’s sense of control and authority.
Custom-developed for the Phantom, the wheel has a firm, thin rim, the diameter of which is intended to feel in keeping with the weight of the steering. Trimmed in black leather, with no stitching to ensure a smooth surface, it has an elliptical cross-section, to fill the curvature of the driver’s hand, and the spokes have integrated horn buttons for intuitive use when required. There are also a number of control switches, which can be used to operate the in-car entertainment system, telephone and navigation systems.
The automatic transmission is operated via a ‘shift-by-wire’ column stalk, which controls the gearbox via electronics rather than a mechanical linkage, and offers the driver a simple choice between Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. A separate switch on the steering wheel enables the driver to select a low gearshift programme for added control on severe inclines, or to maximise acceleration from a standstill.
Functionality Upon Request
The Phantom Drophead Coupé’s interior was conceived around a concept of ‘Functionality upon request’. This has resulted in some delightful touches, such as the clock, which rotates at the flick of a switch to reveal an LCD screen, and the Multi-Task Controller (MTC), which gives the driver complete control of the Phantom’s sophisticated navigation, entertainment, communication and vehicle settings systems, which are displayed on the LCD screen. Another example is the location of the front seat adjustment controls, which are hidden within the centre armrest.
Stereo
The Phantom Drophead Coupé’s LOGIC7 audio system is the most comprehensive in-car hi-fi in the world.
With nine amplifiers and 15-speakers, including a pair of 200mm bass speakers housed in their own 16-litre resonating chambers beneath the floor, the audio system delivers incredible acoustic realism and a depth of sound - thanks to its 7.1 surround sound processing specially set-up to suit the acoustic demands of a soft-top car - that completely immerses you in music. And with a single in-dash CD player, AM/FM tuner, a 6-CD changer located in the lower glove compartment, and an MP3 connection, it has a near-endless supply of music from which to draw.
Dashboard Controls
To truly appreciate the quality of the Phantom Drophead Coupé’s switches you need to use them. Plated in luscious, high-gloss chrome, the ‘organ stop’ ventilation controls, ‘eyeball’ air vents and ‘violin key’ buttons for the electric windows and stereo share a delicious solidity and pleasing coolness to the touch. Weighted to perfection, they are immensely satisfying to use, and reward on both a practical and aesthetic level. Form and function have never been fused more successfully.
Seating
A full four-seater, the Phantom Drophead Coupé offers unsurpassed comfort for you and up to three friends.
Though upholstered in the same, supple, squeak-free leather as the Phantom, the Phantom Drophead Coupé’s seats are all-new. Up front, the driver and front passenger seats incorporate the seatbelt system, as the two-door configuration and soft-top means there is no B-pillar on which to mount the belts. Powered to enable effortless adjustment, the seats also power forward and back to allow unimpeded ingress and egress for rear seat passengers.
Those in the rear will enjoy Rolls-Royce’s delightfully informal ‘lounge’ seat configuration, which seats two passengers in uniquely sociable style, while generous legroom further enhances comfort levels and a total sense of relaxation.
Umbrella
A unique design feature first seen in the Phantom, the Phantom Drophead Coupé also benefits from the thoughtful and ingenious provision of discreetly concealed umbrellas. Housed in specially fan-heated compartments to assist drying, one umbrella can be found within each front wing. Released at the touch of a button, the water-repelling Teflon-coated umbrellas are easily accessible, and a perfect illustration of our attention to detail.
